World War II magazine: U.S. prisoner Irvin Scott (May 1998)

In this article in World War II magazine, Mike Richman writes about Irvin Scott Jr., a U.S. Marine who served in World War II.  Scott, captured by the Japanese in 1942 in the Phillipines and imprisoned for much of the war, tells the story of how a Japanese guard secretly left his own ration of quinine to help the malaria-stricken Marine, who was near death. Scott gradually regained some strength and was liberated at the end of the war.
